William Getumbe, the singer of the viral song “Yesu Ninyandue,” has come out to clarify the true meaning of the controversial song, following the remarks made by Copyright CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua. Despite being described by some Kenyans as blasphemous, Getumbe argues that those who take offence to the song are the ones who partake in the very vices that the song condemns.
âNyandua has many meanings. It is slang, but Kenyans have sexualized its connotation. Music often employs indirect language as a form of creativity. In my song, I was petitioning God for elevation. Even Jesus, in his teachings, didnât reveal everything openly.â
In his statement, Getumbe insists that he will not be swayed by offensive comments, including those made by Dr. Ezekiel Mutua.
âI know Kenyans are not happy about my song, and it has elicited various reactions. You expect different reactions from people. Insults have been plentiful, but Iâm not affected by them. Kenya is 80% Christian, so if they disagree with my song, then thereâs no need for insults,â he stated.
