More than twenty people narrowly escaped death after a lorry and matatu they were travelling in were swept by swollen waters of a river which broke its banks in Mwiki, Nairobi.

The incident took place at Maji Mazuri bridge.

In a video seen, the drivers of both vehicles dared to cross the flooded section of the bridge despite warnings from locals and other motorists.

However, most occupants of the two vehicles escaped unhurt and a rescue operation is currently underway to help those stuck on the roof of the vehicles and some who are still trapped inside.

Motorists and residents are urged to exercise extra caution especially during the rainy season and avoid crossing flooded rivers.

The whole country has been affected by the downpour. Roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been destroyed. Heavy rains have been pounding various parts of the country since last. A report recently stated that over 50 people have lost their lives in deadly floods that have affected all counties.
