Owning a radio station or a TV station may come as a privilege to some people while others may be a norm since they are big companies and have a wide variety of listeners.
Some influential people in the country own huge stations and media houses like the Nation Group, Royal Media Group, Standard Group, Mediamax and Radio Africa Group.
Having a station comes with a lot of advantages and disadvantages to the company owning it since they have to always be on the lookout for competitors.
Over the years some media houses have had to stop the airing of some of their stations because of various reasons.
The reasons range from satellite failures, bankruptcy, court orders or orders by the communications authority of Kenya.
Below are some of the reasons that some big stations had to be shut down
1) Metro FM
It was a station owned by KBC which was famous for it’s reggae music. The station went off-air after it failed to attract advertisements to support the station when KBC decided to divide its stations into commercial and public information.
2) Times TV and World Evangelism TV
These are stations owned by the famous pastor, Ezekiel Odero and Paul Mackenzie who were linked to the Shakahola massacre.
The stations were suspended by the communications authority of Kenya after they stated that the stations violated broadcasting standards requirements and licensee conditions.
3) Venus TV
Venus TV was a 24-hour broadcasting TV station that was located on Baba Dogo Road. The TV station had to go off-air because it couldn’t manage the rising operational costs that kept the TV station alive.
4) QTV and QFM
These are stations that are owned by the Nation Media group back in 2016 the station went off-air because the company wasn’t able to maintain them and gave a reason that it was a necessary move to secure its business position in the market.
5) One FM
The station shut down after it underwent a financial crisis which included unpaid bills and they couldn’t manage to stay on-air anymore.
6) Kiss TV
Radio Africa Group (RAG) shut down Kiss TV, its entertainment TV station on, March 17 2023. The abrupt decision came 14 years since the station launched in 2009.
“As you may be aware, our TV department has been unable to generate any revenue despite effort by everyone to turn the station around,” COO Martin Khafafa confirmed.
