On the evening of January 18th, former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya gave a speech during the Azimio la Umoja rally of the One Kenya Coalition. In his speech, he warned former Prime Minister Raila Odinga against having a handshake with Kenya Kwanza principal William Ruto. Oparanya stated that if Odinga agrees to have a handshake with President Ruto, then he will go there alone. “Oparanya: Mimi kama mwanajeshi wako Raila, ukienda mambo ya ‘handshake’ utaenda pekee yako… nipe mamlaka niondoe wale Wabunge ambao wanaenda ‘State House’,” he said.

Additionally, Oparanya urged the ODM party to allow him to deal with ODM rebels who recently met President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua at State House. Meanwhile, Odinga criticized Ruto’s government for intimidating Kenyans with a high cost of living and failing to address key issues facing them.

During the rally, Odinga was accompanied by Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua, former Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, Roots party leader George Wajackoyah, Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni, Oparanya, Ledama Olekina, James Orengo, Anyang Nyong’o, and many others.
