The arrest of Sudanese opposition leader Yassir Arman in Nairobi has sparked widespread outrage, with human rights activists and political leaders questioning Kenya’s role in detaining foreign political figures.

Arman, the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Revolutionary Democratic Current (SPLM-RDC), was arrested upon arrival in Nairobi on March 5, 2025.

According to reports, the Kenyan National Police Service (NPS) acted on an Interpol warrant issued at Sudan’s request.

Sources indicate that after his arrest at the airport, Arman was taken to a Nairobi hotel, where he remains detained as authorities investigate whether the charges against him are criminal or politically motivated.

His detention has ignited strong reactions, with many Kenyans and international observers criticizing the government’s decision to comply with Sudan’s request.

Critics argue that Kenya should not be involved in Sudan’s internal political disputes, especially given the country’s ongoing conflict and allegations of human rights violations.

Some opposition leaders and civil society groups have called for Arman’s immediate release, warning that his extradition to Sudan could put his life at risk.

As pressure mounts on Kenyan authorities to clarify their position, the incident has raised serious diplomatic concerns, with many questioning whether Kenya is being used to silence foreign political dissidents.
