Security officers from Meru recovered assorted illegal firearms from four suspects in Maua town during an operation to crackdown on criminals using ‘panya’ routes to carry out illicit activities.

The four suspects, selling rifles, were arrested after undercover police officers posing as buyers engaged them in a negotiation.

According to police, the suspects arrived aboard a motorbike with the firearms concealed in a miraa bag.

During the negotiation, the buyers agreed to give Sh300,000 for the guns. However, the supposed-to-be buyers, turned against the sellers and ordered them to lie down and surrender. As a result of the operation, two AK47 rifles with two bullets were recovered.

The suspects were taken to police custody and would be arraigned in court as soon as the investigation will be completed. It is believed that the suspects have been hiring the weapons to criminals daily for monetary gains. The source of the firearms is yet to be established.
