A life sentence was granted to nurse Lucy Letby, who it was revealed was the UK’s most prolific child serial murderer in recent memory.
The 33-year-old was found guilty of killing seven newborns at the Countess of Chester Hospital and trying to kill another six.
Letby purposefully gave two of the infants insulin poisoning, forced-fed milk to others and gave air injections to other babies.
She didn’t show up for her sentencing hearing in the courtroom.Letby, who is just the fourth woman in UK history to get such a sentence, will spend the remainder of her life in prison.
The most severe sanctions, whole-life orders, are only given to people who have committed the most terrible crimes.
The “cruelty and calculation” of Letby’s conduct, according to Mr. Justice Goss, were “truly horrific.”
The faith that all citizens have in those who work in the medical and caring professions was grossly violated by the way you behaved, he added. “You acted in a way that was completely contrary to the normal human instincts of nurturing and caring for babies.”
When police examined Letby’s home, he said, they discovered handover forms for all save the first four kids, which he was confident she kept as “morbid records.”
He remarked, “There was a malevolence in your conduct that was almost sadistic.
“Throughout this trial, you have vehemently resisted accepting any blame for your crimes.
“You show no regret. There are no limiting circumstances.
He declared that copies of his remarks and the parents’ personal declarations will be given to Letby.
There was nothing Letby’s attorney, Ben Myers KC, could “add in mitigation that was capable of reducing the sentence” because the neonatal nurse “maintained her innocence throughout these proceedings.”
Parents of the newborns filled the public gallery; some of them sobbed subtly when the victim impact statements were earlier read.
As they listened to the remarks, some of the jury members who had endured nine months of testimony were sad as well.
