Uhuru Kenyatta

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday morning joined Catholic faithful at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Nyali, Mombasa, as Christians marked Ash Wednesday, the solemn day that signals the beginning of the Lenten season. The former Head of State took part in the early morning service alongside local congregants, and he was spotted seated at the back with ordinary Kenyans as he observe the traditional rites associated with Ash Wednesday.

The occasion marks the start of a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and self-reflection that prepares Christians for Easter, one of the most important events in the Christian calendar.

Witnesses described the service as calm and reflective, with Kenyatta blending quietly among worshippers as clergy led prayers focused on repentance, humility, and spiritual renewal.

The symbolism of ashes, which reminds believers of human mortality and the call to turn away from sin, formed a central part of the liturgy.

In a goodwill message shared later, the former President extended warm wishes to Christians embarking on their Lenten journey.

He expressed hope that the season would inspire deeper prayer, personal reflection, and acts of compassion toward others, especially the less fortunate.

Kenyatta also used the moment to reach out to Kenya’s Muslim community and Muslims around the world as they prepare for holy month of Ramadan. He wished them a blessed period of fasting and devotion, noting that Ramadan, like Lent, emphasizes discipline, generosity, and spiritual growth.

His participation in the Ash Wednesday service and inclusive message to both Christians and Muslims underscored Kenya’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance.
