A shocking scene of negligence and indifference was witnessed on Thursday morning along the Eastern Bypass in Nairobi, where the body of a woman who was hit by a matatu lay unattended for hours.
The woman, who was identified as Mary Wanjiku, was crossing the busy highway near the Kamakis area when a speeding matatu knocked her down and fled the scene. Her belongings, including a handbag and some groceries, were scattered on the road.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred at around 6:45 am, but no one bothered to help the woman or call the authorities. Instead, other motorists and pedestrians continued with their activities, ignoring the lifeless body that was blocking the traffic.
Some people even took photos and videos of the incident and posted them on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation from netizens who accused them of being heartless and insensitive.
It was not until 10 am that the police arrived at the scene and removed the body to the mortuary. The police also launched a manhunt for the driver of the matatu, who is said to be operating on the Ruiru-Kamakis route.
The incident has raised questions about the state of road safety and emergency response in the country, as well as the moral decay and lack of compassion among Kenyans.
Many have called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and harsher penalties for rogue drivers who cause accidents and flee. Others have urged the public to be more humane and helpful to victims of road accidents, instead of being bystanders or voyeurs.
The family of the deceased woman has appealed for justice and compensation for their loss. They have also asked for prayers and support from well-wishers as they prepare to bury their loved one.
