Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been charged with treason, a capital offense in the country. The 68-year-old politician, known for his staunch criticism of President Yoweri Museveni, was arrested in November 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, and subsequently transferred to Uganda.

Initially tried in a military court for illegal possession of firearms and alleged solicitation of military support to destabilize national security, his case was moved to a civilian court following a Supreme Court ruling that civilians cannot be tried by military tribunals. Besigye’s detention has sparked widespread concern, especially after he initiated a hunger strike, leading to a deterioration in his health.

Despite calls from international organizations like Amnesty International and the Commonwealth for his release, the Ugandan government insists on proceeding with the trial. This development intensifies the political climate in Uganda ahead of the upcoming presidential elections, with fears of potential unrest if Besigye’s health continues to decline.
