Nominated UDA Senator Gloria Orwoba has denied allegations published by the local weekly newspaper The Nairobian about her purported relationship with former Ghanaian President John Kufuor.
In a statement shared on social media on Friday, December 20, 2024, Orwoba called for a public apology and the immediate retraction of the story. She criticized The Nairobian for infringing on her privacy and handling her personal life in what she described as a disrespectful manner.
The nominated senator condemned the outlet for spreading what she termed baseless gossip, asserting that it was a misrepresentation of the truth.
“I take great exception to the salacious gossip framed by The Nairobian newspaper, as the truth to whatever end,” read part of Orwoba’s statement.
She noted that, as a female politician, she has faced various forms of violence, both verbal and physical, throughout her career. Orwoba expressed frustration over the challenges of confronting entrenched patriarchy and powerful figures while advocating for equality and justice.
She further accused The Nairobian of disrespecting former Ghanaian President John Kufuor, whom she referred to as a respected African statesman. Orwoba emphasized that the newspaper should have accorded Kufuor the opportunity to respond to the allegations before publishing them. She demanded an immediate apology and the withdrawal of the article, accusing the outlet of propagating unfounded insinuations.
“At the very least, an Honourable Statesman of Africa like H.E. John Kufuor should be given his right of reply. For these, I demand an apology and withdrawal of this article and the propaganda it insinuates,” Orwoba said.
The Nairobian’s latest issue on Thursday, December 20, alleged that the newly nominated senator was madly in love with the ex-president and had sired a child with him. This followed the circulation of photos online showing the two in close proximity.
