Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has criticized President William Ruto, alleging that he is more concerned about Raila Odinga’s success in the next African Union Commission (AUC) election than Raila himself. Speaking on Citizen TV on Friday, February 14, Mukunji stated that Raila remains a big political threat to Ruto’s 2027 re-election attempt, and that retaining the AUC chairmanship would be a relief for the president.

“I’d argue the president sounds more frantic for Raila’s victory than Raila himself. “That’s because Raila remains a serious threat in 2027,” Mukunji explained.

His remarks come only a day after rumors surfaced that the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which comprises 16 nations, including Tanzania, had directed its members to vote for Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato rather than Raila.

Despite the setback, Mukunji praised Raila’s experience, saying he would be a benefit to the continent if elected.

Meanwhile, 55 African heads of state, including President Ruto, have assembled in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the critical vote, in which Raila will face Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Randriamandrato.
