The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert, warning U.S. citizens and other foreigners of a heightened threat of terrorist attacks in high-traffic areas frequented by tourists and expatriates throughout Nairobi and other regions in Kenya.

According to a circular released on Friday, the security alert emphasizes that various locations frequented by U.S. citizens and foreign nationals in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya have become attractive targets for potential terrorist attacks.

These attacks could occur with little or no prior warning, targeting a wide range of places that foreigners and tourists typically visit, including hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls, markets, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other public spaces.

This alert comes as a stern warning about the persistent and evolving security concerns within Kenya. The Embassy urges all U.S. citizens and other foreign nationals to remain vigilant during their stay in Kenya and to take the following actions:

Actions to Take According to the US Embassy:

1 Stay Alert: Exercise heightened awareness and caution when in areas frequented by tourists and foreigners. Be mindful of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.

2 Review Your Personal Security Plans: Ensure you have a well-defined security plan in place, including communication protocols and emergency contacts. Share these plans with your travel companions.

3 Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Stay informed about local news and security updates. Keep abreast of any developments that may impact your safety.

4 Monitor Local Media: Regularly check local news sources and the Embassy’s updates for any developments that may affect your safety.

5 Avoid Protest Areas and Demonstrations: Stay clear of protest areas and demonstrations, as these events can quickly escalate, posing additional risks to your safety.

6 Avoid Crowds: Given the potential for attacks on crowded places, exercise caution and consider changing plans if you find yourself in densely populated areas.

7 Keep a Low Profile: Avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself. Dress modestly and refrain from conspicuous displays of wealth or status.

“The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, in collaboration with Kenyan authorities, continues to closely monitor the security situation in the country. U.S. citizens and other foreign nationals are strongly encouraged to follow these guidelines for their safety and to maintain contact with the Embassy and the local authorities as necessary. For further information and assistance, U.S. citizens can contact the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi ” read part of the statement
