With the political marriage between President William Samoei Ruto and his then-Deputy, Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua, and the Mount Kenya region in general seemingly over, the race to 2027 appears to be developing spontaneously and systematically in the political sphere.
Raila Amolo Odinga, the leader of the ODM Party and former Prime Minister, is credited with playing a crucial part in Mr. Gachagua’s impeachment after his affiliated parliamentarians passionately supported the expulsion petition. His newfound relationship with President Ruto is viewed as the primary driving force behind this massive political triumph and movement in the country.
Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, a long-time ally of Mr. Odinga, has found refuge in struggling Gachagua, with the two considered as fresh political compatriots poised to strike a huge political deal in the country before 2027. It is also reported that the duo have the approval of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has purportedly withdrawn his staunch support for Raila.
This scenario depicts the 2027 presidential election as a two-horse battle between Ruto and potentially Kalonzo. However, as said above, much is expected to happen in the interim, including massive movements and reorganisations.
Former Vice President, the late Kijana Wamalwa, once quipped that when you make a deal with Raila, make sure Amolo and Pdinga are present because the man could jump ship in the next minute.
Ruto’s camp is quite confident that they have Raila’s traditional support bases as a potential replacement for the vote-rich Mount Kenya region in the 2027 presidential election. Although this may be the case, President Ruto should closely examine Raila Amolo Odinga’s political moves and cards.
The man from Bondo is known for making last-minute decisions and might pull the trigger, break apart from his relationship with Ruto, and join forces with Kalonzo, Gachagua, and Uhuru to build yet another formidable political formation that could shake the country’s political landscape.
If the foregoing occurs, and Kalonzo runs for president with the support of Uhuru and Raila, Ruto will become the only President in the Republic of Kenya to serve a single term.
