Security agencies in Mandera county are on high alert over a terror accident that has claimed the lives of two police officers and a county government staffer.The three died after the vehicle they were travelling in hit an improvised explosive device (IED) that had been planted along the Banisa-Rhamu road.
The two officers died instantly after the vehicle stumbled upon the deadly device while five others sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident.
The Mandera county commissioner Amos Mariba said the escort vehicle that was ferrying the victims was totally damaged by the explosive device that is highly suspected of being planted by the Al-Shabaab terror group.He also said a reinforcement team immediately arrived at the scene of crime and engaged the attackers who disappeared in a nearby thicket after being overpowered.
Police officers who were injured during the ordeal were taken to Nairobi for further medical attention.
