Two men are in police custody after being arrested for allegedly impersonating the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers and defrauding a citizen of over Ksh.200,000.
The suspects, identified as Nicholas Okoth Owino and David Otieno Odhiambo, reportedly posed as detectives to convince the victim that they could speed up an ongoing investigation in exchange for payment.
According to authorities, the two suspects used their false identities to gain the victim’s trust, eventually extorting over Ksh.200,000.
“Reports indicate that Nicholas Okoth Owino and David Otieno Odhiambo unlawfully extorted over Ksh.200,000 from a citizen by falsely presenting themselves as DCI officers. They claimed they could expedite an ongoing investigation, luring the victim into their scam,” the DCI stated.
The arrests were made by detectives from the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters, following a probe into the scheme.
Investigators are now looking into whether Owino and Odhiambo may have attempted similar scams with other individuals.
