It is a great day for the African film industry after it was revealed that films from South Africa and Tunisia are in the running for next month’s Oscars awards.
According to BBC My Octopus Teacher is a documentary focused on a friendship forged between a South African filmmaker and a creature in the Atlantic Ocean.
Meanwhile, The Man Who Sold His Skin, is a satire starring Monica Belluci which is up for best foreign language film.
In an year where diversity was greatly rewarded, women are among the biggest winners ahead of the 93rd Academy Awards.
70 women received a total 76 nominations, a record for a given year. It’s also the most diverse Oscars ever, with 9 of the 20 acting nominees from ethnic minority backgrounds. 2 women were also nominated for best director – the first time more than one woman has been shortlisted for that prize in the awards’ 93-year history. Mank led among the nominated films with 10 nods.
