The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has dismissed social media reports claiming Cheptumo Ayabei has been appointed as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

In a social media post on Tuesday, May 28, TSC flagged the social media reports as fake.

The current TSC CEO is Nancy Macharia, was appointed in 2015 to replace Gabriel Lengoiboni for a renewable five-year term.

Her term was extended for a further five years in 2020, meaning that she will serve as TSC CEO until 2025.

Ayabei on the other hand serves as the commission’s director of finance. He joined TSC in 1999 as a finance officer and rose through the ranks to director of finance.

According to the TSC Act 2012, the appointment of the commission’s CEO must be a competitive process, meaning a vacancy ought to have been declared and the position advertised.

“The appointment of the Secretary to the Commission under Article 250 (12) of the Constitution shall be through a competitive recruitment process,” the act reads in part.

The TSC CEO’s role is to head the Commission’s Secretariat, to be the Commission’s accounting officer, to be the custodian of all the Commission’s records, and to implement the Commission’s decisions.

Other responsibilities include: assigning duties to and supervising the Commission’s staff; facilitating, coordinating and ensuring the implementation of the Commission’s mandate; and ensuring that staff adhere to public ethics and values.
