The body of a 23-year-old male student from the University of Embu was discovered in a local dam on Monday morning. The student, whose identity has been withheld pending family notification, had been reported missing over the weekend.
Local authorities were alerted by residents who spotted the body floating in the dam. Emergency services, along with police, promptly arrived at the scene to retrieve the body. Preliminary investigations suggest the student may have drowned, but officials have not ruled out other possibilities.

The University of Embu community is in mourning, with students and faculty expressing shock and grief over the untimely demise of their colleague. Counseling services have been made available on campus to support those affected by the tragedy.
This incident adds to a series of unfortunate events involving students in the region. In July 2024, a third-year Quantity Survey student from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology was found dead in a quarry in Juja, with an autopsy revealing drowning as the cause of death.
Similarly, in October 2022, a father and son from Thagana village in Mbeere were found dead in Gitaru Dam after a three-day search, with suspicions that a hippo attack led to their drowning.
Authorities are urging students and residents to exercise caution around water bodies and to report any suspicious activities. Investigations into the student’s death are ongoing, and anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
