Kenya is bracing for another wave of protests today as the “Occupy JKIA” demonstration unfolds on July 23. The atmosphere is tense following the events of July 16, which saw significant riots and injuries in major cities including Nairobi, Mombasa, and Migori.

The government, under President William Ruto, finds itself at a critical juncture, having addressed some youth grievances. However, dissatisfaction remains high.

Currently, videos circulating online depict groups of youths blocking traffic along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as they march towards Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), raising widespread concern.

Acting Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja has issued a strong warning to demonstrators, emphasising the need to adhere to legal limits.

He mentioned the Protected Areas Act, Cap. 204, which bans entry into certain areas without permission, stressing the legal consequences of today’s protests.

Because of possible disruptions, the Kenya Airports Authority has advised passengers to arrive early due to increased security checks.

Those with plans along Mombasa Road are urged to remain vigilant as the situation develops.

The momentum for today’s demonstration escalated last Friday, July 19, when President Ruto announced his first set of 11 cabinet nominees. This list includes six individuals from the previous administration, a decision that has sparked considerable public outrage.

Critics see the appointments as a betrayal, saying the president ignored the many calls for change.

People have reacted quickly and strongly, with many Kenyans unhappy about the return of well-known political figures.

Additionally, the new nominees’ ties to the former cabinet have only deepened the sense of public disillusionment.
