Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested three police officers said to be extorting motorists and civilians in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

The three; Corporal Oscar Serem Biwott, Constable Simon Kiplagat Nyunyutik and Constable Edwin Benedict Mubweka, were caught red-handed on Wednesday morning at Globe Cinema roundabout having collected Ksh.48,250 bribes within two hours.

The officers, stationed at the Central Police Station, were then escorted to EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre to record statements.

“Following numerous complaints from motorists, bodaboda riders and the general public regarding traffic police officers extorting money from motorists at Globe Cinema roundabout in the guise of traffic law enforcement, the Commission conducted investigations on several days and confirmed the allegations,” a source at EACC noted.

EACC said the three suspects are currently being detained at Kilimani Police Station awaiting arraignment.

The arrest comes days after the anti-corruption agency launched an audit into the National Police Service (NPS) operations to identify and seal weaknesses conducive to corruption in the security forces.
