The lorry veered off the road after a break failure
Three people have been reported dead following a road accident along Karaiani-Kangema road in Mathioya, Murang’a County.

Police confirmed the accident saying it involved a lorry which veered off the road and landed in a ditch.

Police say preliminary investigations indicate that the lorry had a brake failure leading to the accident.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, November 26, at 10am.

It comes days after a 12-year-old boy died leaving at least 25 others aged between 10 and 16, injured.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening, November 23.

The group, part of a soccer team from an estate in Syokimau, was returning home after a football training session at the Soccer Talent Ground along Ngong Road.

According to witnesses, the accident happened as their hired minibus was joining the ICD road.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road, strike a guardrail, and roll downhill before landing on its side.

The injured children were rushed to various hospitals, with 16 reported to be in stable condition.

National Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the details, adding that their coach and two guardians—along with the driver, also reported injuries but were attended to.

The boy succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a City Hospital.

In a bid to address the devastating toll of road accidents, the Ministry of Roads and Transport through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on November 17, launched the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028.

The initiative aims at curtailing the alarming rate of road accidents, which not only shatter families and devastate communities but also pose a significant economic burden on the nation.

It is estimated that road carnage costs the country’s economy a staggering Sh450 billion annually.

The brunt of this burden falls disproportionately on trauma victims and their families, while hospitals and emergency services also bear the strain.

The unveiled plan encompasses a comprehensive set of strategies to enhance road safety for all users.

Key initiatives include improvements to road infrastructure, vehicle safety standards, stricter enforcement measures, heightened public awareness campaigns, post-crash care services, promotion of safe driving practices road safety database, and monitoring and evaluation systems.
