George Watailor was a popular Kikuyu benga musician many years ago and he died in the year 1996 leaving Mt Kenya community mourning the death of a great legend. Some hours ago a Kikuyu media group visited his parents in Kahumbu, Murang’a county to know what really killed the great musician.
According to the father George was a very talented man and he left to Nairobi where his music career become very successful. Around 1980 he become very sick and he was admitted at Kenyatta national hospital but the ground still demanded him on stage. Other musicians would steal him at night from the hospital by bribing doctors since whenever he was in attendance of a show it attracted so many people.
The idea of sneaking out of hospital could not allow doctors give him good medication and after sometime he went back on stage. After sometime he became extra sick and he decided to go back home and his father promised to take care of him and he was taking him to hospital. Later kikuyu musicians led by Timoh Na Mburu, queen Jane among others come and offered to take him to hospital.
They took him back to Kenyatta national hospital and after sometime he was referred to Bagathi hospital for special treatment. In 1996 the popular musician was pronounced dead and his burial attracted musicians and fans across the country.
According to his father, he was told that his son died of tuberculosis and he had to believe that although he believes it was something more than that since his son loved worldly pleasures.
