Kenyan constitutional lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has stirred public conversation with his strong views on two prominent figures in the country. In a statement that has gained attention on social and mainstream media, Njiru made a sharp comparison between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga.
“There is absolutely no comparison between His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua and Mr. Maina Njenga. One is a nationalist, and the other is a cultist respectively,” Njiru declared, sparking debate over the roles and reputations of the two individuals.
Njiru’s statement appears to draw attention to the contrasting public images of Gachagua and Njenga. As the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua has positioned himself as a leader focused on national unity and governance. His supporters praise him for promoting economic recovery and grassroots empowerment, especially in the Mt. Kenya region.
On the other hand, Maina Njenga has a controversial past as the former leader of the outlawed Mungiki sect. Although he has rebranded himself as a community leader and politician, critics often associate him with the group’s history of violence and cult-like practices.
Njiru’s remarks reflect ongoing political tensions in Kenya, as leaders and commentators discuss the country’s direction and the figures shaping it. His choice of words—labeling one a “nationalist” and the other a “cultist”—has divided opinions. Supporters of Njiru argue that his statement reflects the need for clear ethical and leadership standards. Others, however, see the remarks as politically charged and overly simplistic.
As Njiru continues to voice his views on governance and politics, his comments remain a focal point in Kenya’s political landscape, highlighting the influence of legal experts in shaping public discourse. Whether one agrees with his perspective or not, Njiru’s bold commentary has undoubtedly added to the national conversation.
