Teachers inhabiting varied local and regional destinations have broken silence with a powerful statement after the Kenyan Government deducted the controversial housing levy from their January salaries.

Addressing via The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) today the 31st day of January 2024, teachers have demanded an immediate refund of the money which was deducted from their January salaries to cater for the controversial housing levy.

The teachers have intimated that the Kenyan Government did not in any way have the moral authority of deducting the housing levy from their respective January salaries following the eminent court order that declared the levy unconstitutional.

“KUPPET requests that the unlawfully withheld taxes from teachers be released right away. Additionally, we have asked the Commission for a guarantee that it would follow future court orders, particularly those pertaining to the housing tax,” Misori stated.

This comes after the Court of Appeal decided on January 26, 2024, not to uphold rulings prohibiting the government from withholding housing levies from Kenyans who are employed. The landmark ruling practically meant that the housing levy deductions remained suspended, as the High Court had previously ruled.
