Member of Parliament for Mumias East, Peter Salasya, has found himself at the center of controversy after comments he made about soliciting sex workers in Nairobi.

Salasya stated that he had recently arrived in the capital city when he encountered women “on duty” on the streets. The MP said that his “desire for pleasure was on a high” at the time, leading him to inquire about their pricing for a night’s experience.

The comments, made during a live television interview, have drawn widespread condemnation from Kenyans on social media as well as from fellow lawmakers. Many have accused Salasya of objectifying and exploiting vulnerable women, while also calling into question the ethics and legality of his actions.

“As a Member of Parliament, Mr. Salasya should be setting a better example for his constituents and for the country as a whole,” said Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris. “His comments demonstrate a complete disregard for the dignity and wellbeing of sex workers, who are often facing extremely difficult circumstances.”

Activists working to support sex workers’ rights have also condemned Salasya’s remarks. “These women are human beings, not commodities to be purchased,” said Peninah Mwangi of the Kenya Sex Workers Alliance. “It is unacceptable for an elected official to speak about them in such a dehumanizing manner.”

For his part, Salasya has defended his actions, claiming that he was merely “curious” about the lives of sex workers.
