Despite public displays of unity between President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, simmering tensions between their respective camps have resulted in a quiet but escalating battle fought through proxy wars.

Members of Parliament aligned with the President, including National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro, and MPs Mwangi Kiunjuri and Oscar Sudi, have launched sustained public attacks on Gachagua, further fueling speculations of discord between the two leaders.

The tension appears to have escalated following Ruto’s unity deal with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

This move, viewed as a political strategy, has brought some of Raila’s allies into Ruto’s fold, including Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga.

Wanga recently criticized Gachagua’s past “shareholding” remarks, which she claims divided the country along ethnic lines.
