Kenya faces a worrying rise in teenage pregnancies, according to a recent report by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KHRC). The numbers paint a stark picture, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

Homa Bay County has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies, with 16% of all reported cases occurring there. Kiambu County follows closely behind, reporting 12% of cases.

While Homa Bay and Kiambu have the highest numbers, teenage pregnancies are a problem across Kenya. Counties like Machakos, Kakamega, Meru, Kilifi, and Nairobi are also seeing a troubling increase.

Even though these counties have lower percentages than Homa Bay and Kiambu, the overall trend is still a major cause for concern. For example, a report from the Open Institute revealed that over 4,000 schoolgirls in Kilifi County became pregnant in just the first half of 2023.

The KHRC report stresses the importance of careful monitoring and swift action from authorities and everyone involved. Protecting the futures of young girls is crucial, and stopping this trend from getting worse is a top priority.

This requires a team effort from different groups, including organizations like Resolve Communications and the Kenya Human Rights Commission. They need to work together to understand why this is happening and offer support and guidance to young girls who are at risk.
