Teachers in Kisii County have taken to the streets in a heated protest as schools reopened for the new term.

At the start of the protests on Monday morning, teachers gathered outside the Kisii town offices of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and chanted chants calling for the resignation of TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia.

According to reports, the protests are caused by teachers’ complaints about being paid too little, not getting promoted on time, and not being treated with respect by the TSC.

Leading the protesters were union reps who carried signs and posters that said things like “Macharia Must Go” and “We Demand Our Rights.”

Reports from the area say that the teachers have promised to keep protesting until their requests are met.

Speaking on the condition of secrecy, one teacher said, “We’ve been waiting for too long.” After many requests, the TSC has overlooked us, and now we’re saying enough is enough. “Get Macharia out of here!”

Tensions are still high in Kisii town, where cops are working to keep things under control. Violence has not been recorded yet, though.

Additionally, the teachers’ union has asked teachers all over the country to stand together, which increases the likelihood of a national strike.

Concurrently with the start of the new school year, the protests happened, making things unclear for both students and parents. As national exams get closer, many people are worried that the protests could make it harder to learn.
