Yvonne Okwara, anchor for Citizen TV, spoke up about her life and work at a recent online discussion. Okwara described her journey from hosting a children’s show on television to becoming a prominent figure in Kenya’s media.
Okwara said she first knew she wanted to be a journalist when she was 8 years old, according to an interview she gave to the Impact Africa Network on Friday, November 27.
Her first job in the media industry was at KBC, where she hosted a variety show for a salary of Ksh 500 per episode.
Okwara found motivation through watching anchors on the American news network CNN, which she admired for their enthusiasm and commitment to their jobs.
After finishing college, she worked as an intern, radio producer, and host at Hot 96 for Royal Media Services, then moved to Q FM for Nation Media Group, and finally settled at KTN for Standard Media.
Okwara, ever-curious, acquired the knowledge and experience necessary to become a TV anchor. She contributed to the launch of KTN News, a 24-hour television news network, as a member of the KTN team.
Okwara is the showrunner and research director for three programs: the Explainer, the News Gang, and a brand new business program.
She credited her success to living by her principles, standing firmly by her convictions, being herself, and working hard.
