Blogger Robert Alai has publicly criticized journalist Yvonne Okwara for what he perceives as a Public Relations (PR) stunt during a recent interview with businessman and politician Jimmy Wanjigi on Citizen TV. In a scathing statement, Alai expressed his frustration over what he described as a lack of critical questioning regarding Wanjigi’s integrity, especially in light of recent allegations that Jimmy received taxpayer money for work that was never completed.
Alai accused Yvonne of intentionally avoiding tough questions, allowing Jimmy to present himself in a favorable light without addressing the controversies surrounding him. “I wonder why there’s no question on Jimmy’s integrity considering that he has recently been paid taxpayers’ money for work not done,” Alai remarked, highlighting the glaring omission in the interview.
He further criticized Yvonne for remaining silent throughout the interview, implying that her passivity was deliberate, designed to make Jimmy appear “holy and knowledgeable” despite his controversial reputation. Alai did not hold back, labeling Jimmy as “one of the most incorrigible crooks we have in the system.”
The comments by Alai reflect a growing frustration among some Kenyans who feel that powerful figures are often shielded from scrutiny in the media, particularly when they have the resources to manage their public image. His remarks have sparked debate on social media, with some agreeing that the interview lacked the necessary rigor, while others defended Yvonne’s approach.
The incident raises important questions about journalistic integrity and the role of the media in holding public figures accountable, especially those with a history of controversy. As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen how this criticism will impact the reputation of both the journalist and the interviewee.
