Residents of Kegonga town in Kuria East Sub-County staged a violent protest on Tuesday following the death of a primary school teacher who was allegedly shot by police officers in plain clothes on Christmas night.
The angry residents blocked the Kegonga-Kehancha road using boulders and lit bonfires as they threatened to attack Kuria East Police Station. They accused the police of extrajudicial killings and demanded justice for the slain teacher.
The protestors engaged police in running battles as teargas canisters were used to disperse them. Several people were injured and arrested during the clashes.
Samuel Mwita, a witness, claimed he had come from a bar at 9 pm with the deceased and were heading home when the police ambushed them.
“The police came and attacked us on our way home. The man and his brother were on a motorcycle and I was walking. They shot the man on the back,” he said.
He identified the deceased as John Omondi, a teacher at Kegonga Primary School. He said Omondi was a peaceful and hardworking man who did not deserve to die.
The police have not issued any statement on the incident. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The body of the teacher was taken to Kegonga Sub-County Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
The incident has sparked outrage among human rights activists and local leaders who have condemned the police brutality and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
