The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) has asked parents to prepare their children for school reopening on Monday, August 26.
In a statement on Sunday, August 25, KESSHA chairman Willie Kuria affirmed that the learners’ well-being will be safeguarded while in school amid a looming teachers’ strike.
“With regard to the looming teachers’ strike occasioned by a labor dispute between teachers’ unions and the TSC, KESSHA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the TSC, wishes to assure all parents and learners nationwide that the learners’ welfare and well-being will be safeguarded while in the institutions of learning.
“Subsequently, parents are advised to prepare learners for the third term school reopening starting 26th August 2024,” Kuria remarked.
His remarks come after the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) called off its planned nationwide strike, which was to begin on Monday, August 26.
KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu noted that they had discussions with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and therefore decided to call off the strike.
“We had an agreement because TSC decided to talk to us. The strike notice, which was to elapse today (Sunday) midnight, has hereby been withdrawn by the National Executive Council,” Oyuu stated.
However, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) insisted that the planned strike was on as scheduled, stating that TSC had not addressed all their demands.
“This council decided to vote that the strike continues,” KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori stated on Sunday.
