A cloud of mystery hangs over the death of 13-year-old Wesley Njiru, a grade 8 student at Joy Gardens Primary School in Umoja, Nairobi. School administration reported that Njiru died by suicide after jumping from the 7th floor on Friday evening. However, the circumstances surrounding his death have sparked outrage and a demand for a thorough investigation.
According to reports, Njiru, who had just begun this term at the school, was allegedly “interrogated” by the son of the school director, Anthony Kimani Mwangi.
The family of the deceased suspects foul play and fears that their son might have been sexually assaulted before his death. These suspicions are fueled by the fact that Mwangi’s son went into hiding before being apprehended by detectives from Buruburu Police Station.
The incident has reopened discussions about the safety of children in Kenyan schools, with many expressing concern about the prevalence of unresolved deaths in both public and private institutions. Njirû Simon, the grieving father, is seeking justice for his son. Kenyans on social media have echoed this sentiment, offering condolences and demanding a transparent investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Several aspects of the case raise questions that require investigation. Did the school take appropriate measures to ensure student safety, particularly for a new student? What exactly transpired during the alleged “interrogation” by the director’s son? A comprehensive investigation should address these questions and determine the cause of Njiru’s death.
The potential involvement of the school director’s son adds another layer of complexity to the case. If true, it raises serious concerns about the school’s leadership and its ability to provide a safe and secure environment for students.
The Njiru family deserves closure, and Kenyan parents deserve to know their children are safe at school. A thorough and transparent investigation by the DCI is crucial to ensure justice is served and to restore trust in the education system.
