Safaricom broke its silence this evening by issuing a strong warning statement to all of its customers in a range of local and regional destinations.
In a planned effort to decrease the likelihood of M-PESA funds being lost to scammers, Safaricom addressed three critical principles that all of its customers must follow in a quick video clip broadcast on the company’s official social media website.
Safaricom recommended using a unique M-PESA PIN. Safaricom advised all users not to use basic digits for their M-PESA PIN, such as their birth year or 1234.
Safaricom warned users that 1234 and year of birth are easily guessable PINs, which implies that con artists and scammers living in various local and regional locales could potentially steal their hard-earned M-PESA monies.
Safaricom also revealed two other tactical methods to ensure that the money contained in M-PESA remains secure and unattainable by scammers and fraudsters: stop sharing the M-PESA PIN with others and, finally, avoid disclosing personal information to untrustworthy Safaricom media accounts or representatives.
