Ten church worshippers are reported to have died after their matatu collided with a lorry in Mai Mahiu, Naivasha.
The Kenya Red Cross Society while confirming the 2pm accident stated that it had dispatched a rescue team.
News sources indicate the ill-fated vehicle was hit by the truck after losing control. Naivasha OCPD Stephen Kirui confirmed the crash.
“A road traffic incident has been reported at Mai Mahiu involving a lorry and a 14-seater matatu. Our first responders are en route to the scene,” the Kenya Red Cross announced.
The police boss stated that the matatu was headed to Mau Narok before the incident occurred.
The accident caused a traffic snarl-up along the ver-busy highway even as the police and Nakuru County disaster management team helped in the rescue process.
“The lorry hit the matatu from behind mangling its body.It occurred at around 2pm leading to heavy traffic jam on the road,” said the officer.
In the images that have since circulated online, the matatu was completely deformed with glasses strewn all over the road.
However, a survivor, said the ill-fated matatu overloaded and was being carelessly driven.He said passengers had complained to the driver after it narrowly evaded an accident before moments before the tragic accident.
According to the Nakuru County Police Commander, four men and one woman had so far been confirmed dead while the injured were rushed to the Nakuru Referral Hospital.
“The driver never heeded calls by passengers to slow down.He was constantly chewing miraa and the conductor appeared drunk.We were overcrowded in the vehicle and they also overcharged us,” he recalled.
