Sabina stated that the opposition leader is not constitutionally allowed in the parliament where the representation of the people takes place. She argued that the opposition leader does not have any voice if he/she doesn’t have a platform to represent the people like in the parliament and the senate.
The nominated MP went ahead and suggested that instead of an official office of the opposition, the person who becomes number two in the elections should be the leader of the minority in the parliament while his deputy becomes the leader of the minority in the Senate.
“We are proposing what was proposed earlier that the person who becomes number 2, instead of saying you want to have an office of the leader of the opposition, to do what? If you are a leader of the opposition you are not inside parliament, the only way you will have to speak to your people is through Maandamano because you will have no voice. So we propose that the person who becomes number 2 becomes the minority leader at the National Assembly and his deputy becomes the Minority Leader at the senate,” Sabina Chege stated.
She further asserted that if Raila and Kalonzo were given the leaders of the minorities in both houses, things would have been different.
“So they will have a voice at the National Assembly and the Senate. I would imagine that if Raila was today a leader of the minority in the National Assembly, things would be different. If Baba was in parliament and Kalonzo in senate, things would be different,” she added.
