The High Court’s temporary halt of the replacement of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked mixed reactions, with President William Ruto’s Senior Economic Advisor, Moses Kuria, expressing confidence that the matter is already settled.

The court, led by Justice E.C. Mwita, on Friday, October 18, issued conservatory orders suspending the Senate’s resolution to impeach Gachagua, citing significant constitutional questions and the public interest involved.

The case, which has drawn nationwide attention, will now be heard on October 24 by a special bench appointed by the Chief Justice.

However, Kuria’s response suggests that the government’s stance remains firm.

“The appointment had already been done. Justice Mwita’s orders, as sought by the immediate former Deputy President, are overtaken by events. Congratulations to His Excellency Abraham Kithure Kindiki,” Kuria remarked, seemingly downplaying the court’s ruling.

Kithure Kindiki had been nominated to replace Gachagua as the Deputy President, following his impeachment in a historic Senate vote.

His nomination was also approved by the National Assembly hours later.

While the High Court’s order temporarily pauses this transition, Kuria’s statement indicates that the government may proceed with formalizing Kindiki’s appointment regardless of the ongoing legal battle.

Many Keyabs are now waiting anxiously for the October 24 hearing, which could potentially determine the fate of Gachagua and the legitimacy of Kindiki’s nomination.
