A tribunal will hear evidence in a dispute regarding a public parcel of land in Lang’ata, Nairobi, and the families who were uprooted as a result of the post-election violence in 2007. The local politician Mr. Saja Muraya and the alleged misuse of President William Ruto’s name are at the center of this argument.

The 1,200 families have petitioned the National Environment Tribunal to forbid Mr. Muraya and the Director-General of the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) from using Ruto’s name in the issue after accusing Muraya of selling parcels of public land under the President’s name.

IDPs are battling for the land they have been living on for the past 15 years, but it is about to be given to a private developer who will start the eviction process.

It is hoped that justice will be served for the internally displaced people (IDPs) and that the tribunal will decide these people’s fate in a way that is consistent with the law. This case will serve as both a reminder of how crucial legal due process is and a warning to politicians against abusing their authority by bringing a president’s name up in conflict.
