With only a few days remaining to 2024, Kenya Navy Commander Major General Jimson Mutai is set to begin his final year at the helm of the naval unit of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Major General Mutai was appointed to the position in 2020 to succeed Lieutenant General ( Rtd) Franklin Levy Mghzlu who was promoted to the position of Vice Chief of Defence Forces by the then President Uhuru Kenyatta.

As his term at the helm of Kenya Navy unwinds in 2024, what next for him? At only 55 years, Major General Mutai is at the peak of his military career.

Seen by many as the front runner to succeed General Francis Ogolla as KDF chief, it is very likely that Major General Mutai could rise in military in future promotions as he is prepared for the top job.

Major General Mutai joined the military as a cadet officer in 1989 and was commissioned as second lieutenant in 1990.

He has held several command positions and has undertaken extensive military training both locally and internationally.

Currently undertaking masters degree at the University of Leicester, UK, Major General Mutai is also a graduate of the National Defence College.
