On Tuesday, August 15th, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula filed a resolution demanding the ban of Tiktok in Kenya.

The Executive Officer of Bridget Connect Consultancy, Bob Ndolo proposed the petition in order to limit the use of TikTok in the country due to different issues.

Speaker Wetangula formally delivered the petition to the assembly demonstrating that this issue has arose the interest of both the public and the legislative body.

As Kenya’s parliament debate this critical decision, the country waits with bated breath to see how this delicate balance of innovation and regulation will play out.

However, Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa appears to be opposing the motion after he claimed that embracing regulations is better than banning the whole use and that this will be the key to address social media’s challenges

He added that social media platforms are the important part of modern life, but unregulated use can lead to problems.

However, he noted that prohibiting platforms such as TikTok undermines their benefits and the economy they have built, urge the house to bring up a balanced approach involving the governments, tech corporations and people working together to create legislation that assure content control.
