The sudden death of former Border Patrol Unit Commandant Gitiba Mwita has taken President William Ruto in his quest to end runaway insecurity in the northern frontier counties.

Mwita passed on after reportedly collapsing at his home at Matuu before being pronounced dead on arrival when he was rushed to hospital. He was 54 years.

With the dust settling following the former cop’s funeral on Friday, all eyes are on President William Ruto as he seeks the right man to succeed Mwita at the BPU Kanyonyo, Kitui training college.

The Border Patrol Unit is a crucial link in the government’s renewed effort to address the runaway insecurity in the North Rift once and for all.

The BPU is part of the multidisciplinary security team deployed in the volatile North Rift to battle bandits and cattle rustlers.

With only one day to the end of the challenging year for President Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kindiki Kithure in as far as national security is concerned, who will succeed Mwita? Well, only time will tell.
