According to the political analyst Muema Mutua, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is currently politically dominant in the Mt Kenya region despite being ousted from office, may not be allowed to vie for any public office in the next decade.
However, he says the region is not short of leaders, they could appoint someone today and elevate them to kingpin status tomorrow.
Similarly, they could elevate Mr. Gachagua to the level of supreme kingpin and task him with finding political allies to counter Dr. Ruto and his allies.
It is not surprising that online, cartoons mocking and insulting the new alliance between Dr. Ruto, Mr. Kenyatta, and Mr. Odinga have emerged and become instantly popular!
Already, Mr. Gachagua has dismissed the new alliance and has left the Mount Kenya region—and Kenya as a whole—in a state of suspense by promising to make a significant political announcement in January 2025.
He emphasised that between now and early next year, the entire country will remain in suspense, as it is also during this time that Mr. Odinga is expected to vie for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC) in elections to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Mr. Odinga’s win or loss is expected to have significant effects on Kenya’s politics. Many Kenyans who dislike how Dr. Ruto is leading the country are praying for Mr. Odinga to lose so that he can return to the country, fall out with Dr. Ruto, and start troubling his government.
If Mr. Odinga loses and falls out with Dr. Ruto for any reason, it is highly likely that Mr. Odinga will join a modern alliance wherever Mr. Gachagua is. Possibly, Mr. Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Party will also be part of it.
Ultimately, Dr. Ruto may end up with only Mr. Kenyatta by his side, and everyone knows that Mr. Kenyatta cannot offer significant political assistance.
Kenya is a land of intense politics, sometimes a mix of irritation and entertainment, but most importantly, it is up to us ordinary citizens to ensure that we are not used by politicians to tear our country apart.
