The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary General, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
The decision, which has sparked debate within political circles, was reached after a majority vote by NEC members. Reports indicate that 25 members voted in favour of his removal, while four opposed the motion.
According to party officials, the move was informed by concerns over alleged indiscipline and internal disagreements that had emerged in recent weeks. The party leadership maintained that the decision was made in line with ODM’s constitution and internal procedures.
Sifuna did not attend the meeting in Mombasa. In his absence, the party appointed Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo, who previously served as Deputy Secretary General, to act in the position pending further decisions.
The removal exposed visible divisions within the party. Among those who reportedly opposed the move was Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga. Other NEC members are also said to have expressed reservations about the process, arguing that Sifuna should have been given an opportunity to defend himself before such a decision was reached.
During the high stakes meeting, Ruth Odinga shared a photo of herself appearing deep in thought. The image quickly circulated online, drawing attention from supporters and political observers.
Although she did not accompany the photo with a detailed statement, the timing of the post led to speculation that it reflected the tense atmosphere within the meeting. Political commentator Robert Alai later weighed in on the matter, claiming that Sifuna could challenge his removal in court.
The developments come at a time when ODM is reassessing its political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election. During the same meeting, party leaders reportedly discussed plans to formally exit the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
ODM has scheduled a National Delegates Convention (NDC) for March 26, 2026, where key resolutions, including leadership changes and strategic direction, are expected to be ratified.
Sifuna’s removal marks one of the most significant internal shake ups within ODM in recent months. As the situation unfolds, attention now turns to whether the former Secretary General will seek legal redress and how the party will manage internal cohesion moving forward.
