In a move aimed at bolstering Kenya’s security and peacekeeping capabilities, President William Ruto secured 16 US-made helicopters during his recent State visit to the United States of America.

This acquisition, announced by the White House, includes eight Hueys for regional peace and security operations and eight MD-500s for peacekeeping missions.President William Ruto uses state choppers managed and maintained by the Kenya Air Force.The helicopter’s interior, modified for VIP transport, is about 23 cubic meters – large enough to accommodate up to 26 passengers.

It comprises soft leather, wrapped armchairs and expensive furniture. Other special features are installed to ensure Ruto enjoys maximum comfort while on board.The chopper is flown by trained pilots also drawn from Kenya Air Force. Before every departure, Kenya Air Force is carefully checked, and the Presidential Seal is placed on the side of the aircraft.

The MI17 chopper is a multipurpose plane which can be used for a variety of missions, including assault force airlift, cargo transportation, troop fire support, air-to-surface attack, military column escort, medical evacuation, and combat search and rescue (CSAR).

Externally, the helicopter can carry up to 4,000kg of cargo in a sling. The main cabin has internal winch capabilities, and the freight transport floor has tie-down rings. A pod for an external fuel tank is located on either side of the fuselage.

The MI 17 can accommodate up to 26 passengers or up to 12 injured personnel on stretchers attended by medical staff. Two Klimov TV3-117VM turboshaft engines mounted on top of the fuselage power the Mi-171. Each engine produces 1,641 kW. Two VK-2500 turboshaft engines, each rated at 2,700hp, can be added to the helicopter as an option.

While on board a military chopper, lawmakers are not allowed to live stream or make any recordings in real-time.

All VIPs accompanying the President, including Members of Parliament and Cabinet Secretaries, undergo rigorous security screenings conducted by Ruto’s dedicated security team. This ensures that only trusted individuals are allowed on board, maintaining the President’s safety.

Strict rules govern passenger behavior once aboard. Real-time recording and live streaming are strictly prohibited to prevent the inadvertent exposure of Ruto’s location, which could pose significant security risks.

Details about the President’s chopper and other transport arrangements are closely guarded, known only to select members of his security detail.

To further mitigate risks, items that could endanger the President are banned from the chopper. Even licensed gun holders are prohibited from bringing firearms onboard.

Legislators traveling with Ruto receive briefings on communication protocols, stressing the importance of maintaining confidentiality about the President’s movements and related information.

Unauthorized internet postings are strictly forbidden to protect Ruto’s security and public image.

Seating arrangements are carefully planned, with the President’s designated seat reserved exclusively for him. The number of VIPs accompanying Ruto is limited, facilitating efficient communication and security management during flights.

Ruto’s military chopper is equipped with powerful engines and state-of-the-art technology, ensuring swift and secure transportation even in challenging conditions. The design prioritizes performance and safety, reflecting the importance of the President’s aerial mobility.

Every aspect of President Ruto’s aerial travels is managed with precision, underscoring the critical role of security in protecting Kenya’s head of state.

According to Eurocopter, the plane has a flying range of close to 500km in a single flight, with the capacity to fly at a top speed of 284 km/h and a maximum take-off range of 680km above sea level.

The flight manufacturers also explained that the chopper’s cockpit is Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible, a characteristic that enables the helicopter to operate effectively both at night and during the day.

The helicopter is reported to have the option to accommodate one pilot and ten passengers, or two pilots and nine passengers at any one time.
