A group of MPs from the Rift Valley has praised President William Ruto for maintaining a hands-off stance in the ongoing impeachment process against his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
Led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, the lawmakers stated that his decision to allow the proceedings to unfold without intervention underscores his commitment to upholding democratic processes and the rule of law.
“As MPs, we want to thank the president for not interfering with it in any way,” he said.
“He has said that the law should follow its course to the end and justice served,” he added.
Speaking in Nandi, Melly said Ruto’s non-interference sends a strong message about accountability and respect for the constitutional process.
He also defended their actions as MPs, terming it part of their constitutional mandate. He said impeachment of a leader is provided for in the constitution.
“There is nothing wrong that we have done. Anyone can be impeached. The motion came and we exercised our mandate,” he stated.
He also stressed the importance of a united country devoid of regional politics. Melly said anyone preaching divisive politics should be condemned.
Aldai MP Maryanne Kitany echoed the sentiment saying they want a united Kenya.
“Let us not be talking about mountain politics all the time. We want a country that is united,” she said.
A record 282 MPs both from the ruling coalition and the opposition voted to impeach Gachagua last Tuesday.
The matter is currently before the Senate and set to come up next Wednesday and Thursday.
Gachagua is scheduled to appear during the trial process to defend himself.
