The names of the 11 Kenyatta University students who tragically lost their lives in a horrific road accident on Monday have been disclosed.
These 11 individuals were part of a larger group of 58 students traveling to Mombasa for an academic excursion when their school bus collided with a trailer.
The devastating incident occurred in Maungu, Voi, Taita Taveta county, along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
All the students involved were from the School of Public Health.

At the time of the accident, the trailer was en route to Nairobi.
The individuals who tragically lost their lives in the accident are Navile Omondi Opiyo, Beneas Otieno, Hellen Mbula Kisilu, Michael Muteti, Vallary Akinyi Ouma, and Oslo Mwendwa.
Additionally, the deceased include Felix Gori Nyaata, Austine Omondi Owino, Rodger Kiprotich Rono, John Mbiriri Mureithi, and Patricia Murugi Mwangi.
The bodies of these 11 individuals have been transported to the Kenyatta University Hospital Morgue, where they are currently preserved awaiting burial procedures.

In a statement issued on March 19th, University Chancellor Paul Wainanina mentioned that certain students with severe injuries were airlifted to Nairobi following an evaluation of their medical condition.
Avenue Hospital has confirmed that the majority of the students who survived the accident and were admitted to the facility for treatment are now in stable condition.
According to Dr. Said Mohammed, the manager of Avenue Hospital, they received 18 survivors from the accident, all of whom were stabilized by medical staff.

“On Wednesday, Mohammed expressed contentment that 17 of the hospitalized patients are in stable condition,” he remarked.
He further stated that only one individual from the accident remains in critical condition.
Among the 18 survivors currently receiving care at the hospital, there are 12 female students and six male students.
Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, paid a visit to the hospitalized students.

Inyangala extended her well wishes for a swift recovery to the students and encouraged them to remain brave.
On March 19, the University made the decision to suspend classes as a tribute to the 11 students who tragically lost their lives.
In a notice, KU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics, Waceke Wanjohi, announced that classes will be halted for three days to allow time for mourning the loss of the departed souls.

“In light of this unprecedented tragedy, the University Administration has opted to halt all classes for a period of three days starting from Wednesday, March 20, 2024, to allow us to grieve the loss of our cherished students,” Wanjohi announced.
Wanjohi emphasized that the 11 students who tragically perished in the road accident were affiliated with the Department of Health Management and Informatics within the School of Health Sciences.
