A sombre mood hung over Kitale as family, friends, and colleagues bid farewell to renowned Senior Magistrate Dorothy Muoma, who died under tragic circumstances after reportedly being abandoned by the government during her struggles with mental health issues.
Muoma, once a respected figure in Kenya’s judicial system, spent years building a promising legal career.
Between 2003 and 2010, she worked in various law firms, where she earned a reputation as hardworking, dedicated, and confident.
Those who knew her during this time remember her as a professional who carried herself with dignity and a strong commitment to justice.
In 2010, she joined the Office of the Attorney General under the NALEP program, serving as an Assistant Registrar in Kisumu.
She held the position until 2014, when illness reportedly forced her to step away from public service. Her exit marked the beginning of a difficult chapter in her life.
Determined to continue her work in law, Muoma founded her own firm, Lukas Muoma & Associates, in 2016.
However, ongoing health challenges made it difficult for the firm to thrive.
Colleagues say she remained hopeful and committed to her career despite the setbacks she faced.
Her difficulties reportedly worsened while pursuing a master’s degree in India, where she was involved in a serious road accident.
The incident affected her health and led to mental health complications that gradually disrupted her personal and professional life.
Over time, her challenges reportedly led to social and financial struggles.
Before her death, Muoma is said to have been living on the streets, a situation that shocked the community given her former status as a powerful and accomplished magistrate.
