Kenyan reggae performer Paul Otieno Imbaya went by the stage name Mighty King Kong. At the Siaya District’s Ugenya, is where he was born.
Due to a serious case of polio he had as a child, he was completely dependent on a wheelchair. He left Ambira Primary School at the end of Standard Six because his father passed away. He relocated to Kisumu, where he set up shop and lived while begging on the streets.
In 1993, he relocated to Nairobi. A local DJ he had met in Kisumu named DJ Stone helped him get the go-ahead to play once a week at clubs in Nairobi.
Many Kenyans, particularly his admirers of reggae, were shocked by his abrupt passing. The musician, who began as a street panhandler in Kisumu before coming to Nairobi with the help of DJ Stone, performed at Nairobi clubs on a weekly basis while also working with bands like Mushrooms and Pressmen.
He rose to stardom with the help of the next level studios’ Maurice Oyando and his albums Ladies Choice and Cinderella. In 2004, he released Return of the King, his third album.
In contrast, Mighty King Kong accused its contract of being exploitative in public.
At the age of 34, he passed away on Christmas Day 2007 from poisoning.
