Radio remains a powerhouse of information and connection across Kenya, with listenership reaching impressive heights in the first quarter of the 2025/26 cycle.
Leading the nation, the Lower Eastern and Lake regions both boast a dominant 83% penetration rate. This high engagement extends through the Rift at 82%, Western at 81%, and South Nyanza at 79%.
The medium’s primary draw is its utility as a source for news and current affairs, which commands 38.6% of the total audience.
Entertainment and talk shows also maintain a significant hold, capturing 23.6% of listeners.
In the Lower Eastern cluster—comprising Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni—the airwaves serve as a vital local link.
Similarly, the Lake Region counties, including Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Busia, Kisii, and Nyamira, demonstrate that radio is an essential, daily companion for the majority of the population.
